53rd International Belgrade Book Fair

The 53rd International Belgrade Book Fair (Medjunarodni beogradski sajam knjiga) was opened last night by the acclaimed Serbian author Dragoslav Mihailovic whose works include Kad su cvetale tikve and Goli otok. Held at the Belgrade Fair complex, over 800 publishers from Serbia and over 20 countries, such as the UK, Canada, Angola, Denmark, Ukraine, the United States, France and Iran, will participate at this year’s fair.

Serbs are big readers, virtually everyone loves a good book from the young to the old, as you can see by the number of book stores in any Serbian town. As always, this year’s book fair will be visited by large numbers of people from Serbia and other countries in the region. With so many publishers presenting their books, you’re bound to find something appealing to purchase and read at home.

I’ve never actually been to the Belgrade Book Fair even though I’ve had the chance to go to two of them while I’ve been in Serbia. I plan on changing that and I’ll attend this year’s event. I used to love reading as a child and teenager but reading for pleasure was soon replaced by reading for academic purposes and that killed all the enjoyment (and much of my spare time). I’ve been meaning to get back into reading books for a while now and the Belgrade Book Fair seems like the perfect opportunity to pick up some English language books and also to find a few books by modern Serbian authors to sink my teeth into.

Will you be visiting the Belgrade International Book Fair this year? Are there any books you would recommend? Click here to have your say.

Good post. I like the Book Fair, but am not going this year. Work all day, too lazy to go on weekends. And I hate crowds. Yes, there are a lot of bookstores in Belgrade and other cities, but it’s so rare to see anyone reading a book in a cafe like in Paris. Newspapers, magazines yes, but not books.
