Belgrade Weekly Phone Photo #15

Spring has definitely arrived in Belgrade. This is Trg Nikole Pasica (Nikola Pasic Square) on a beautiful spring day with tulips and greenery everywhere. Belgrade really springs to life with colour once winter subsides. The fountain in the centre of the photo is most welcome when it becomes hotter as the spray cools you down as you walk past. The statue you can see on the left is of Nikola Pasic who was prime minister of Serbia and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes  several times between the 1890s and the late 1920s. He was also Mayor of Belgrade twice during the 1890s. Why not play around with a live web camera pointing at this very square?

    Wow, Serbian is a very strange language sometimes! How do you pronounce that word “trg”? It has no vowel! I am kind of confused…

    In Russian, the word for square is “ploshchad”. In case you were wondering.

    And by the way, that’s a beautiful photo. I like it a lot :)

    Am currently a victim (since last Thursday…) of internet havoc, so I haven’t been checking blogs! Been using scheduled posting from friends’ places.

    I like these last two photos. Saw them in person a bit when accompanying my daughter and fiance downtown this past week. But it’s still too chilly for me….:<(

    @Natalie

    Yeah, that was a challenge when learning Serbian but it gets easier over time. Basically, you need to be able to roll your ‘r’s. Trrrrg!

    @Welcome back, Bibi! Yeah, the weather is a bit funny – I look outside and it’s a tad cloudy/windy so I go out with a jumper on, then the sun comes out and I’m too hot!

    @Adam

    Well being Scottish rolling your “r”s should be easy :)

    On that connection why don’t you take a photo of Makenzijeva (Mackenzie Street) and do a piece about the history of this? It is named after a chap was called Frances Mackenzie and I believe he is listed as a great benefactor at St Sava.

    Hey Andy,

    Yes, it was no problem rolling my ‘r’s! :) But putting two consonants on either side was a challenge at first! I definitely had an advantage over my English coursemates.

    That’s a good idea, shall keep that in mind for one week.
