Daily Habits of the Average Serb

Photo by ARTS

A new survey has shed some light on the daily habits of your average Serbian citizen. Here’s a rundown of some of the published results:

  • The average Serbian citizen wakes up at 7 a.m.
  • The average Serbian teenager doesn’t wake up before 9 a.m. on weekdays
  • 42.5 percent of Serbs aged 18-25 sleep until (or after) 11 a.m. on weekends
  • The average Serbian citizen spends almost third of his/her life asleep
  • The average female gets 7 hours and 40 minutes of sleep a night
  • The average male gets 7 hours and 34 minutes of sleep a night
  • The average female does five times more housework than her male partner
  • The youngest Serbs do 15 times less housework than the oldest Serbs
  • The average Serbian citizen spends almost 40 minutes a day on public transport
  • Serbian girls aged 12-17 study for 78 minutes a day; boys 48 minutes
  • Serbian men aged 18-25 study for 36 minutes a day; women 68 minutes
  • The average Serb devotes 10% of the day to personal hygiene
  • The average Serb spends 13% of the day eating

Personally, I get between seven and a half to eight hours of sleep a night and I like to get up around 8am but that’s proving difficult this winter for some reason! I’m glad that I don’t “waste” 40 minutes each day on public transport – I probably spend around 40 minutes a week on buses and the rest of the time I walk.

Unfortunately, I do most of the housework in my flat as “my” female just makes mess – she’s a rabbit by the way :-)

Is this a good reflection of the average Serb? Do you notice any similarities with people in your country or yourself? What is your daily routine like?

    Interesting post, Adam. What time does school in Serbia start if teenagers don’t get up until 9am? And what time does it finish? I’m guessing 7 hours of sleep a night is fairly typical worldwide but I function best on 10. I also enjoy an additional top-up afternoon nap. I suppose this means I spend around half my life asleep…hmm, slightly worrying.

    Hmmm. I think if 8 hours of sleep is recommended, then we all sleep 1/3 of our lives. I believe the 40 minutes on public transport is accurate…I sometimes spend that much in my car coming home if I don’t zip home right away. And the personal hygiene…10%…that would make about 1.6 hours of the remaining 16 hours of the day after sleep. Seems like a lot—but maybe men take longer to shave! I think the 13% of eating time adds up to about 2 hours, so that’s probably on the low side, if you count all those people who then have a drink in kafanas.

    @Lar

    I think school is broken into two parts each day which alternate each week – so a pupil would go to high school from 8am to 1pm one week and then the next week 2pm to 7pm. I think that’s how it works, maybe someone could let us know for sure?

    @Bibi

    Yeah, the traffic can be a nightare in Belgrade at times! Also you can proably apply the 1/3 of life spent sleeping to any country in the world – it’s the standard I suppose.

    This is interesting part:
    # The average female gets 7 hours and 40 minutes of sleep a night
    # The average male gets 7 hours and 34 minutes of sleep a night

    I guess its because of making coffee for her? Takes 6 min! :)

    Haha, that’s an excellent observation, Miss Cybernaut! Hadn’t thought of that possibility! Serbs are true gentlemen it seems! :-)

    Might be true also that Serbs are original gentlemen…but I would bet on native Serbian female coffee-addiction as the most likable reason to be with someone – don’t have to make it yourself :lol: :lol: :lol:

    I am joking :lol:

    Truth is I am coffee addict. And as for 6 minutes of morning mystery …why don’t you post a poll on your blog?
    I am curious as a cat :D
