Djavolja Varos – which literally means ‘Devil’s Town’ – is a natural rock formation, described as earth pyramids, in southern Serbia near the Radan mountains. This Serbian government protected site has made it amongst the top 77 candidates to become one of the Official New 7 Wonders of Nature and is currently number 1 in the Caves, Rock Formations and Valleys category. I think it’s pretty impressive that Djavolja Varos has managed to overtake other much grander natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon in the US and Ayers Rock in Australia.
There’s an interesting legend surrounding the rock formation, which was formed by erosion and volcanic activity, which says that it represents God’s punishment and that earth pyramids are wedding guests which have been turned into stone.
The Official New 7 Wonders of Nature will be announced in 2011. If you think Djavolja Varos deserves to be one of them, go to the official website and cast your vote!
Do you think Djavolja Varos deserves to be one of the new seven natural wonders of the world?
